Local Soldiers Killed in the Dardanelles

Private John Birch, of the first Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers, was Killed on May 11th, five days after his 30th birthday. Birch, whose parents live at 37 Windley-st., had been in the Army nearly seven years, and when hostilities broke out his regiment was at Aden. They came to Nuneaton, however, and then went out with the Dardanelles land force. His brother, Peter Birch, has been in the Navy about three years, and since the commencement of the war has steamed about 30,000 miles in H.M.S. Defence. He is 23 years of age. Their father formerly saw service with the Bolton Artillery Territorials.

John was the son of John Birch, an iron moulder, b.1864 and Martha Jane Birch née Nuttall b.1863.

On the 1891 Census John and his parents were listed with his siblings, Mary Alice b.1867 and William b.1889. Martha Jane's widowed mother Emma Nuttall was also living with them.

On the 1901 Census young John was working as a piecer in a cotton mill. Son William was no longer present but three more children were listed - Peter b.1892, Annie b.1899 and Ellen b.1901. Martha's mother had been joined in the house by John Birch Snr's widowed father William Birch.

By the 1911 Census John was serving as a Private with 1st Bn Lancashire Fusiliers in Multan, Punjab, India.

His parents were living at 37 Windley Street with Peter and Annie. Children William, Ellen and one other unknown child had died by this point and the in-laws were no longer present. Mary Alice was resident with her husband Samuel Entwistle and daughter, Ellen Entwistle.

John's brother, Stoker Peter Birch, was killed at the Battle of Jutland with the loss of his ship, HMS Defence, on 31 May 1916.
