Tracing Your Roots To Gallipoli

Remembering some of the Bolton men who lost their lives in the Gallipoli Campaign of 1915

Richard Higginson

Richard was the son of James Higginson b.1846, a self actor minder, and Christianna Higginson née Smith b.1851.

In 1881 Richard was living at 130 Baron Street, Bolton with his parents and siblings Anne Jane b.1870 and John b.1875.

Richard's father died in 1887 and his mother remarried to Joseph Cranshaw, an iron borer, in 1889.

On the 1891 Census, Richard was living at 5 Franklin Street, Bolton with his mother, step-father Joseph Cranshaw, step-brothers John, Henry and Charles Cranshaw, half-brother James Cranshaw b.1890 and siblings Anne Jane, John and William b.1884. At the age of 11 Richard was listed as 'learning machine fitting'.

In 1901 Richard was living with his mother, step-father, step-brothers Henry and Charles Cranshaw, half-brother James Cranshaw and brother William. At this point Richard was employed as a general labourer / excavator.

Richard married Amelia Alice Hindley b.1879 at St Bartholomew's Church, Great Lever, Bolton on 27 July 1901. At that time he was living at 120 Weston Street, Bolton and working as a miner.

By 1911 Richard and Amelia were living in the household of his father in law, Thomas Hindley, at 18 Bull Lane, Bolton along with their children Christianna b.1903, Ethel b.1906 and Florrie b.1910. 3 other children were recorded as having died by 1911.

Richard was then working as a collier hewer.

His Army records gave his home address at time of death as being 54 Morrell Street, Maltby, Nr Rotherham, Yorkshire. His children were listed as Christianna, Ethel, Elizabeth and Violet.

Richard's Army medical records describe him as being 5' 6" tall, with a fair complexion, grey eyes and light brown hair. His age on attestation in November 1914 was given as 31 years and 5 months. He was 34.
