Tracing Your Roots To Gallipoli

Remembering some of the Bolton men who lost their lives in the Gallipoli Campaign of 1915

Walter Hilton

Walter was the son of William Hilton b.1835 and Diana Hilton b.1843

Walter married Elizabeth Dootson b.1880 at St James's Church, Westhoughton in 1900.

In 1901 they were living at 632 Manchester Road, Westhoughton.

By the 1911 Census they were living at 661 Manchester Road, Chequerbent, Westhougton with their children Betsy b.1902, Bertha b.1904, Ellen b.1906, Dinah b.1908 and James b.1910. They also looked after Walter's nephew Harry Hilton b.1907 and niece Mary Elizabeth Stevenson b.1897 - and they had a lodger, Walter's cousin William Hilton b.1874.

Walter worked as a coal miner hewer.

He died of wounds recieved at Gallipoli.

His name is on Westhoughton War Memorial.
