Horwich Sergeant Killed

The Roll of Honour for Horwich is increasing rapidly. Information has been received of the death in Gallipoli on August 7th, of Sergt. A. Holden, 1/5th Lancashire Fusiliers. He was 23 years of age, and previous to being called up was employed at Messrs. W. E. Taylor and Co.’s Victoria Mills, Horwich, residing with Mr. Riley at 12, Scholes Bank. Deceased was a native of Bury, where his mother resides at 8, York-terrace, Wash-lane.

DIED NOBLY FIGHTING FOR HIS COUNTRY

News has been received in Horwich during the week-end of the death (killed in action) on August 7th, at the Dardanelles, of Sergeant Arthur Holden, of the Lancashire Fusiliers.

Sergeant Holden served seven years in the Army and was a reservist. He was also employed at the Victoria Mills, Horwich, during which time he lived with Mr. and Mrs. Richard Riley at 12,Scholes Bank, Horwich.

His ocupation was that of a clothlooker, and before coming to Horwich he was employed in a similar capacity at Egyptian Mills, Bury. He has a brother, Sapper Fred Holden, who is in the telegraph section of the Royal Engineers.

Sergeant Holden was a Bury man, and his widowed mother lives at 8, York Terrace, Wash Lane, Bury.

In a letter dated the early part of August, to Mrs. Holden, a sergeant in the same company intimated Sergeant Holden's death, and he added: "Arthur was very popular, and his cheerfulness and kindness to the men, noticed more particuarly since we came on active service, has endeared him to officers and men alike. he died nobly fighting for his country, and we shall miss him."
