Word has been received by his mother at 56, Ashburner-st., that Pte. Ralph Horne (18,762), 6th Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, has been killed in action at a place not stated, on Nov. 27th. The deceased soldier, who was 22 years of age, enlisted in December of last year in the 3rd Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. In August of this year he was transferred to the 6th L.N.L., and immediately went to Gallipoli with them. He was in training at Felixstowe. When he enlisted he was working with his mother as a fruiterer, prior to which he had been a collier.

Ralph was the son of Ralph Horne b.1855, a fruit seller / greengrocer, and Alice Horne née Gregson b.1863, also a greengrocer by trade.

Ralph snr had been married prior to marrying Alice in 1893 and had two children from the earlier relationship: Harriet b.1880 and Charles b.1884.

In 1901 Ralph was living at 3 Hope Street, Wigan with his parents, half-brother Albert b.1890 (Alice's son - born Albert Gregson), brother Harold b.1895 and sister Mary Elizabeth b.1900. The family also employed a live-in domestic servant. There had been two other children born to the couple: Ernest b.1893 and Harold's twin sister Rosanna who had both died in infancy.

Ralph's father died in 1905.

In 1911 he was living with his mother and brothers Harold and Edward b.1903 in Tunstall, Staffordshire (Where Ralph's father had been born). Ralph and Harold were working as coal miners at the time.
