Tracing Your Roots To Gallipoli

Remembering some of the Bolton men who lost their lives in the Gallipoli Campaign of 1915

John Joyce

John was the son of Patrick Joyce b.1859, a grinder in a cotton mill, and Annie Joyce née Behn b.1860.

John first appeared on the 1881 census living with his parents at 42 Gerrard Street, Kearsley. He was then recorded as John Patrick Joyce but he appears to have dropped his middle name after 1891.

In 1891 he was living at 116 Bridgewater Street, Farnworth with his parents and siblings Francis b.1882, Anastasia b.1884, Lizzie Ellen b.1886, Thomas b.1889 and Michael b.1891.

John married Bertha Ellen Miller b.1881 at St Edmund's RC Church, Little Hulton on 11 February 1899.

In 1901 the new couple were living at 6 Paxton Place, Farnworth with their daughter Cicely b.1900. John was working as a cotton operative stripper.

By 1911 the family had moved to 18 Kimberley Street, Coppull, Near Chorley, Lancashire and consisted of John and Bertha, their children Cicely, Walter b.1903, Ada b.1906, Bertha b.1909 and John's brothers Francis and Joseph b.1896. At that time John was working as a stripper & grinder in a cotton mill.

John enlisted in the Border Regiment at Wigan on 18 January 1915.

His enlistment papers state that he had previously been in the Lancashire Fusiliers (Militia) but had purchased his discharge.

His medical examination recorded him as being 5' 7½" tall.

His address in January 1914 was given as 10 Kimberley Street, Coppull and his occupation as cotton operative.

Three other children were recorded in his Army records - John b.1912, Francis b.1913 and Henry - the latter being born on 11 July 2015, just over month before his father was killed at Gallipoli.
