Bradshaw Farmer’s Son Killed in Gallipoli

A communication from the War Office has been received by Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Lowe, Bradshaw Head Farm, Bradshaw, announcing the death of their son, Private Harry Lowe, 1st Battalion, Essex Regiment, Which occurred in Gallipoli on November 15th. Deceased enlisted in January in the R.F.A., and after a period of training at Newcastle, proceeded to Essex, where he was transferred to the Essex Regiment, and sailed from England to the Eastern theatre of war at the beginning of September. Before enlisting Lowe assisted his father on the farm, and went daily rounds with in Bolton with the milk float. He was 19 years of age and his name appears on the Roll of Honour at St. Mary’s Church Schools, Hawkshaw-lane, which he attended. A message of sympathy has been forwarded to the parents by the headmaster, Mr. T. Beckett. Deceased and the late Private Victor Green, of Higher Barn Farm, Harwood, who was killed in Gallipoli on October 5th, were chums and both enlisted at the same time.

Henry was the son of Andrew Lowe b.1859, a dairy farmer, and Abigail Lowe née Pendlebury b.1863.

Henry first appeared on the 1901 Census living at Bradshaw Head Farm with his parents and his siblings John b.1883, Thomas b.1884, Anne b.1892, James b.1894, Alice b.1899 and Alfred b.1900.

The family group remained much the same at the farm in 1911 except that John was no longer present and there were two more sons, Stanley b.1904 and Fred b.1908. Of the 12 children 3 had died by 1911. Henry was employed as a plaiter down in a calico mill.
