George Edwin Melling

George Edwin MellingFarnworth Weekly Journal 16 July 1915

Mr. Melling. licensee of the Bull's Head hotel, Farnworth, has been informed that his son, Pte. George Melling, of the Lancashire Fusiliers was killed in action on June 2nd. He was 27 years of age and has been in the Army six years, and most of his training has been in India. After returning from India he came home for a short furlough and then went with his regiment to the Dardanelles. His parents have received no tidings from him since April, and then they only got a post card. He formerly attended the Queen-street Seminary Day School, and was concerned with the Queen-st Primitive Methodist Church and whilst in the Army kept up his association with the men's class. Soon after Christmas he came home on furlough and attended the school to personally thank the officers, teachers and scholars for their Christmas gifts. He was possessed of a fair tenor voice and favoured several P.S.A.s with solos.

George was the son of Albert Melling b.1866, landlord of the Bull's Head, Farnworth and previously a cotton spinner, and Mary Melling née Hindley b.1861.

In 1891 George was living at 12 Anvil Street, Farnworth with his parents.

He appeared on the 1901 Census living at 32 Wellington Street, Farnworth with his parents and siblings Bertha Jane b.1892 and William b.1894.

On the 1911 Census George was listed as a private soldier with 1st Bn Lancashire Fusiliers in their barracks at South Tidworth, Hampshire.

By then his parents and siblings were living at 6 Bent Street, Kearsley.

George's name is on Farnworth War Memorial.
