Joseph Michael PhilbinBolton Journal and Guardian 10 November 1916

Pte. JOSEPH PHILBIN, Loyal North Lancashire 42, Partridge-st., joined the Colours soon after war was declared, and whilst fighting in the Gallipoli campaign twelve months later was posted as wounded and missing. The wife and three children received no further tidings of him until, a few days ago, the military authorities reported that he must now be presumed to have lost his life. His name is on the St. Edmund’s Roll of Honour. Philbin was 37 years of age, and prior to the war was a bricksetter’s labourer in the employ of Messrs. Sparks and Hargreaves, Halliwell.

Joseph was the son of Michael Philbin b.1852, a bricklayer's labourer, and Ann Philbin née Early b.1854. Both parents were born on Merseyside.

Joseph first appeared on the 1881 Census living at 29 Back Kirk Street, Bolton with his parents and siblings Edward b.1873, Thomas b.1876 and Mary Ann b.1880.

By the 1891 Census Joseph was living at 12 Barkers Row Bootle, Lancashire with his parents and silings Edward, Mary Ann, John b.1883 and James b.1890. Thomas was living as a boarder in another part of Bootle in 1891.

Joseph married Margaret McDonald b.1879 in West Derby, Lancashire in 1897.

In 1901 the couple were living at 18 Sapphire Street, Wavertree, Liverpool with their son Michael b.1898. Joseph was working as a bricklayer's labourer.

On the 1911 Census they were shown living at 42 Partridge Street, Bolton with children Michael, Maria b.1902 and Joseph b.1905.

All three children were born in Liverpool.

Joseph was again employed as a bricklayer's labourer.
