Tracing Your Roots To Gallipoli

Remembering some of the Bolton men who lost their lives in the Gallipoli Campaign of 1915

Ellis Rothwell

Ellis was the son of Mary Rothwell b.1862.

His mother does not appear to have been married but lived as Mary Houghton, the wife of John Houghton a general labourer and later knocker up. All her children had the surname Rothwell.

Ellis first appeared on the 1901 Census living at 1 Lucy Street, Farnworth with his mother (and John Houghton) and siblings Ernest b.1887, James b.1889, Lee b.1896 and Martha b.1901.

By 1911 Ellis was living as a boarder in the household of his elder brother, James and his wife Maggie. His mother along with John Houghton and his siblings Lee and Martha b.1909 were also listed as boarders.

At that time Ellis was working as a labourer.

He married Margaret Ann Allcock in 1914. They had a son, John b.1914.

Ellis was killed in action.

His wife, Margaret remarried in 1920 to Thomas William Mather.
