Shot Through the Head

Mr. Wolsoncroft, of Oak-st., Farnworth, received official intimation on Sunday that his son, Private S. Wolsoncroft* (27026), of the 8th Battalion Welsh Regiment, was killed on August 14th at the Dardanelles. The news was not unexpected, for a comrade in arms, Pte. H. Topping, of Royley Row, Kearsley, had sent word that Wolsoncroft had been shot through the head by a Turkish sniper a few days after they had made a bayonet charge, The deceased, who was 21 years of age, enlisted at Walkden on September 14th last year in the 6th L.N.L. Regiment, and was transferred to the Welsh Regiment after six months’ training. He went out to the East about four months ago. Like his father he worked at Messrs. Harrison Blair’s Kearsley Chemical Works, where he was serving his apprenticeship as a plumber. He was a footballer, having played with a Moses Gate club, and was on the roll of honour at both St. Peter’s and All Saints’ Churches.

Samuel was the son of Thomas Wolstencroft b.1872, a labourer at a chemical works, and Emily Wolstencroft née Fletcher.

Samuel first appeared on the 1901 Census living at 39 Cooke Street, Farnworth with his parents and sister Alice b.1898.

In 1911 he was living at 37 Lark Hill, Farnworth with his parents and siblings Alice, Martha b.1901 and Thomas b.1906.

Samuel was working as a chemical plumber's apprentice.

His name is on Farnworth War Memorial.

* CWGC incorrectly records him as Samuel Wolsoncroft, as in the newspaper article.
