Bolton Borough Coat of Arms from original Oxford Grove Council School Oxford Grove Council School, Bolton, Roll of Honour 1914-1919

Oxford Grove Council School, in the Halliwell area of Bolton, Lancashire, opened in March 1904 with places for 1,031 pupils. The School's Roll of Honour, (below) which records the names of 66 staff and pupils who gave their lives during the First World War, was unveiled on Friday 19th March, 1920.

In the Summer of 2000 the old building was replaced by a brand new Oxford Grove School on Shepherd Cross Street and the Roll of Honour now takes pride of place in the Assembly Hall there.

This website is part of a research project carried out by local adult students on a Family History course provided by Halliwell UCAN Centre, Hatfield Road with the support of the European Social Fund and Bolton at Home.

It is an attempt to honour the memory of those young men who lived and grew up in the Oxford Grove area and to provide as much information as possible about the real people behind the list of names.

Most of the detailed information and portraits came from the death notices published in the Bolton Journal and Guardian during the First World War, cross-checked against the Commonwealth War Graves Commission records, contemporary school documents and the 1901 census returns.

Trying to identify the right people from their surname, initial and regiment hasn't always been easy - so we can't guarantee that the information presented here is 100% accurate yet. Most entries we are pretty sure of - some less so, and a few we haven't been able to find anything about at all.
