“Died Doing His Duty”

News has been received by Mrs. Marshall, 24 Mill-st., Bolton, that her son, Pte. Thomas Marshall (14442), L.N.L. Regiment, has been killed. The information was conveyed in a letter from a comrade which reads: - Your son was shot through the mouth and back, but suffered no pain, death being almost instantaneous. He was well liked by all who knew him and I can assure you that his loss will be much felt, for he always had a cheery word for everyone. He died doing his duty, and we all extend to you our sympathy. - Pte. Marshall, who enlisted in September, 1914, had been at the front about nine months. Prior to enlisting he was employed as a collier.
